We are proud to present the last SENCO seminar of the 2018/2019 academic year. This seminar will be presented in English and Arabic. Please see below for important information and session timings.
Sensory Souk’s SENCO Seminar: Creating a Sensory Smart Classroom

Description: This presentation will cover:
1. Understanding sensory integration
2. Strategies to implement in the classroom
3. How to build a sensory corner
Expert Speakers:
Bassam Hamad: Bassam is an occupational therapist at The Learning Center which serves various Qatar Foundation schools. Bassam graduated from the American University of Palestine and worked in Kuwait for eight years at a school for children with additional needs. He attended the University of Southern California and became certified as a licensed specialist in Sensory Integration. Bassam is a member of the Palestinian Association for Occupational Therapy and is a licensed specialist with the Ministries of Health in Kuwait and UAE. Bassam is greatly motivated to work and develop himself in his field to serve the interests of his students.
Rita El Sebaaly: Rita is a senior occupational and physical therapist with over 20 years experience. She has worked with adults and pediatric clients in different settings (hospitals, private clinic, schools). She is a member of the Belgium Occupational Therapist Association and the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT). Rita is also a certified Sensory Integration Therapist.  She has worked at Awsaj Academy since 2011.

بسام عادل حمد: بسام اختصاصي علاج وظيفي يعمل في مؤسسة
قطر منذ 3 سنوات، يقدم بسام خدمة العلاج الوظيفي في مدارس مختلفة في مؤسسة قطر، تخرج بسام من الجامعة الأمريكية – فلسطين، ثم انتقل للعمل في الكويت في احدى مدارس ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة لمدة 8 سنوات. التحق بجامعة (جنوب كاليفورنيا) وحصل على شهادة كاختصاصي مرخص  في التكامل الحسي، بسام عضو في الجمعية الفلسطينية للعلاج الوظيفي واختصاصي مرخص من وزارة الصحة الكويتية والإماراتية. يتميز بسام بدافعيته الكبيرة للعمل وتطوير نفسه في مجاله لما يخدم مصلحة الطلبة الذين يعمل معهم.
ريتا السبعلي: ريتا هي أخصائية علاج طبيعي و أخصائية علاج وظيفي  لها أكثر من 20 عامًا من الخبرة عملت مع الكبار و الأطفال في بيئات مختلفة (المستشفيات ، العيادة الخاصة ، المدارس). وهي عضو في جمعية العلاج الوظيفي في بلجيكا والاتحاد العالمي للعلاج الوظيفي (WFOT). ريتا هي أيضًا معتمدة في علاج التكامل الحسي. تعمل في أكاديمية العوسج منذ عام 2011.

Expert Speaker: Shereen Hamadeh is the Director of Foundation Programs at University Foundation College. She also balances a family of two young girls, studying for her Doctorate, and speaking at conferences. Shereen has a passion for both education and inspiring individuals to achieve their goals. She has been in education in Qatar for over 8 years where she has worked in strategic planning at the national level as well as with private institutes. She has recently found a way to apply the technical aspects of strategic planning to individual lives.

Change Your Child’s Behavior -Internal vs External Motivators for Children

We are honored to take part in the Qatar Family Day Celebrations at Wifaq. Under the patronage of Qatar Foundation for Social work, Wifaq is hosting a series of activities and celebrations for Qatar Family Day. We are pleased to collaborate with Wifaq as part of their celebrations to offer the workshop below free to the community.
“Change your Child’s Behaviour”

Description: The workshop will explore:
-Internal vs. External motivations of children, and how they reflect on their long-term and short-term behavior
-Verbal and behavioural routines that are scientifically motivated to promote positive self-image and internalization of good behavior
-It also explores when and how to administer rewards and punishment and how to deal with whining and disobedience.
Expert Speaker: Dr. Kareem Darwish is a principal scientist in the Qatar Computing Research Institute, HBKU.  His area of expertise lies at the intersection of computer science, linguistics, and social sciences.  He has authored dozens of scientific publications, and three books including one on social psychology.  He has an Arabic social psychology YouTube channel that addresses a variety of issues including raising children, cognitive biases, and group psychology.  He received his PhD from the University of Maryland, USA and was previously a scientist at Microsoft and IBM, and a faculty member at the German University in Cairo and Cairo University.

Meet our expert speaker:
Rebekah Lentz is the head teacher of Grade 2 at GEMS American Academy, Qatar and has been teaching for 14 years. She has a master’s degree in international education, an international teacher’s certificate, and is certified to teach students with ELL needs and reading difficulties. She taught for 7 years in the regular classroom and 7 years as a student support teacher for students with SEN and ELL needs. She has taught in Japan, Trinidad, Egypt, and Qatar and has successfully created inclusive learning environments for her students along the way. Rebekah’s passion is creating an inclusive classroom where all students are supported and celebrated.

How To Raise Resilient Children
-Supporting and guiding children to assist them navigate life’s challenges.
-Discuss skills that children and youth need in order to be resilient.
-Discuss parents’ role and what skills to teach children and youth in order to achieve resilience
Guest Speaker: Maram Younis graduated from San Diego State University (SDSU) in California with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She started her career as a domestic violence victim’s advocate in 2011. After gaining some experience, she decided to pursue more areas of Counseling and social service. She returned to SDSU and earned a Masters of science in Marriage And Family Therapy. Currently as a California board certified Marriage and family therapist, Maram is a Child and adolescent psychologist at the department of psychiatry at Sidra medicine. Maram has experience providing therapy to high risk children and youth, individuals, families, and couples. Her work involves assessing, treating and supporting those she works with heal from trauma and reach their highest potential.
